How to do it

  1. Fit the paddles securely to your hands while resting at the pool wall.
  2. Position the pull buoy high between your thighs.
  3. Push off the wall face down with your arms extended forward.
  4. Reach one hand into the water in line with its shoulder.
  5. Bend that elbow so your fingertips angle downward beneath it.
  6. Press the water backward toward your hip with your palm and forearm.
  7. Return your arm forward over the water for the next alternating stroke.
  8. Finish your planned distance with a controlled touch at the wall.

Form cues

  • Roll your shoulders and hips together.
  • Keep your legs quiet.
  • Exhale steadily into the water.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting your head to breatheTurn your face sideways with your body roll until your mouth clears the surface.
  • Rushing each pullUse a smooth stroke rhythm that lets you maintain steady pressure against the water.
  • Clamping the buoy too tightlyUse only enough thigh pressure to keep the buoy from slipping.

Safety

Paddles increase resistance at the shoulder, so forceful pulling or fatigue can overload it. Restricted kicking and occupied hands can also make recovering from breathing trouble harder.

  • Start with paddles only slightly larger than your hands.
  • Use this drill only after you can swim the same distance comfortably without equipment.
  • Swim in a lifeguarded pool with a clear lane.
  • End the interval if shoulder pain appears or you lose control of your stroke.

If you have current or recurring shoulder pain, ask a physiotherapist or doctor before adding paddle resistance.
