Freestyle with Tempo Trainer
Freestyle with Tempo Trainer uses audible beeps to pace your swimming strokes. It trains stroke rhythm and coordination while you practice holding a steady pace.
- Intermediate
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 30 sec
How to do it
- Set the trainer’s beep interval to match the time between successive hand entries at your comfortable freestyle pace.
- Secure the device beneath your cap or on your goggles according to its instructions.
- Push off the wall with your arms extended overhead.
- Begin freestyle with a small, continuous flutter kick.
- Enter each hand in line with its shoulder on successive beeps, alternating left and right.
- Press the water toward your feet with your hand and forearm.
- Recover that arm forward over the water for its next entry.
- Finish the prescribed distance with a controlled touch at the wall.
Form cues
- Look down, not ahead.
- Rotate through your shoulders and hips together.
- Exhale underwater; turn sideways to inhale.
Common mistakes
- Rushing to catch a beepLengthen the beep interval if matching it makes you shorten or scramble your stroke.
- Pausing out frontShorten the interval slightly if you must stall your leading arm to wait for each beep.
- Slapping the waterLet your fingertips enter softly rather than striking the surface to emphasize the beat.
Safety
Forcing an unfamiliar stroke rate can strain your shoulders as fatigue builds. Focusing on the beeps can distract you from breathing, walls, or other swimmers, increasing collision and drowning risk.
- Practice in a lifeguarded pool only once you can swim the planned distance comfortably without the device.
- Check lane direction and spacing before starting each repeat.
- Change the beep interval in small increments rather than making large jumps in speed.
- Stop at the nearest wall if you develop shoulder pain, dizziness, or difficulty controlling your breathing.
Choose ordinary freestyle first if you cannot yet breathe reliably while swimming, and seek medical advice before continuing if swimming repeatedly causes pain or unusual breathlessness.
