Tethered Freestyle Swim

Tethered freestyle swimming uses a waist tether to let you swim in place against resistance. It trains upper-body endurance and aerobic fitness while you practice your freestyle stroke.

How to do it

  1. Attach the tether to its designated pool anchor.
  2. Fasten the waist belt according to the tether's instructions.
  3. Move away from the anchor until the line has light tension.
  4. Extend into a face-down floating position, facing away from the anchor.
  5. Alternate arm strokes, pulling water toward your feet with each underwater stroke.
  6. Add a small, continuous flutter kick from your hips.
  7. Continue swimming in place for the planned interval.
  8. Move back toward the wall under control to end the interval.

Form cues

  • Exhale steadily into the water.
  • Roll sideways to breathe.
  • Keep your hips near the surface.

Common mistakes

  • Crossing the centerlineEnter each hand in front of its shoulder rather than across your head.
  • Rushing short strokesUse a complete, controlled pull instead of increasing effort by spinning your arms faster.
  • Surging against the tetherKeep your effort even so the line stays gently tensioned rather than repeatedly snapping tight.

Safety

Fatigue or entanglement can prevent you from keeping your airway clear, creating a drowning risk. Excessive resistance can also strain your shoulders as your stroke deteriorates.

  • Use a lifeguarded pool only after you can swim freestyle comfortably without assistance.
  • Inspect the belt, line, and anchor before use; learn how to release the belt before entering the water.
  • Position the line clear of your kicking path and other swimmers.
  • End the interval early if your technique breaks down, your shoulders hurt, or breathing becomes difficult.

If you have ongoing shoulder or neck pain, get advice from a physiotherapist before adding tether resistance.
