Heavy Bag Slip-and-Counter
The Heavy Bag Slip-and-Counter pairs a defensive head movement with a return punch. It trains boxing timing, balance, and coordinated punching against a gently swinging bag.

- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Take a staggered boxing stance at punching distance, with your hands near your cheeks and your body slightly outside the bag’s swing line.
- Tap the bag lightly to create a small, predictable swing.
- As it returns, shift your head farther toward your rear-hand side with a small bend through your knees and hips.
- Throw a controlled straight rear-hand punch as the bag moves away, rotating through your rear foot and hip.
- Retract your punching hand to your cheek.
- Return to your starting stance outside the swing line.
Form cues
- Keep your eyes on the bag
- Keep your lead hand by your cheek
- Stack your wrist behind your knuckles
- Exhale sharply on the punch
Common mistakes
- Bending sideways at the waistKeep your chest over your hips so the slip stays balanced rather than becoming a sideways lean.
- Chasing the counterSkip the punch if the bag has moved beyond comfortable reach.
- Turning the drill into power punchingUse light contact so each return stays slow enough to read.
Safety
A swinging heavy bag can strike your head or knock you off balance if you move into its path. Hard or poorly aligned punches can strain your wrist, hand, or shoulder.
- Check the bag’s padding, mounting hardware, and surrounding clearance before starting.
- Use secure hand wraps and well-fitting training gloves.
- Keep your head and torso outside the bag’s full return path; do not practice slipping by letting it brush you.
- Step clear if the swing becomes unpredictable, and let the bag settle before restarting.
Practice the movement without a bag if you cannot reliably judge its return, and seek professional advice before impact work if you have hand, wrist, shoulder, or neck pain.
