How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart, your preferred lead foot forward, and your knees slightly bent.
  2. Raise your fists beside your cheeks with your elbows close to your ribs.
  3. Picture an opponent in the same stance throwing a rear straight toward your face.
  4. Move your head slightly toward your lead-foot side with a small knee bend to slip outside the imagined punch.
  5. Punch your rear fist straight toward face height, rotating your hips over a pivoting rear foot while your head stays off the original line.
  6. Retract your rear fist to your cheek.
  7. Return to your starting stance.

Form cues

  • Keep your eyes on the target.
  • Tuck your chin lightly.
  • Keep your lead hand home.
  • Exhale briefly with the punch.

Common mistakes

  • Slipping too farMove only far enough to clear the imagined fist, keeping your head within your base of support.
  • Bending sideways at the waistLet your knees and hips create the slip rather than folding your torso sideways.
  • Reaching for the targetUse a target within comfortable punching range so your chest does not pitch beyond your front foot.

Safety

Snapping an air punch to full elbow lockout can strain the elbow or shoulder. Twisting over a planted rear foot can stress the knee.

  • Finish the punch just short of elbow lockout.
  • Use a clear area with flooring that allows a controlled foot pivot.
  • Practice slowly before adding speed, ending the set if your balance deteriorates.
  • Keep this version noncontact; do not aim punches at another person.

If you have current neck, back, shoulder, or knee pain, use a smaller, slower motion or seek guidance from a physiotherapist before practicing.
