Human Flag

The Human Flag is a sideways hold on stall bars with your body extended parallel to the floor. It trains side-core strength and shoulder control through opposing pushing and pulling forces.

How to do it

  1. Stand side-on beside the stall bars.
  2. Grip a high rung with your top hand, wrapping your thumb around it.
  3. Grip a lower rung with your other hand, spacing your hands wider than shoulder width.
  4. Press firmly into the lower rung through your bottom arm.
  5. Lift your straight legs sideways using a strong pull through your top arm.
  6. Hold your body horizontal with straight arms, legs together, and feet in line with your hips.
  7. Lower your feet to the floor under control.

Form cues

  • Stack your hips vertically.
  • Keep tension through both shoulders.
  • Breathe in short, steady breaths.

Common mistakes

  • Kicking into positionUse a tuck entry if you cannot lift smoothly without swinging.
  • Hips saggingShorten the lever by bending your knees until you can keep your torso level.
  • Bottom elbow bendingPractice with your feet supported until you can maintain a straight supporting arm without discomfort.

Safety

Losing your grip or shoulder support can cause a sideways fall. The long body lever places substantial stress on your shoulders and elbows, especially during an uncontrolled entry or exit.

  • Check that the stall bars are securely anchored and the rungs are dry.
  • Use a padded landing area with enough clear space for your full body length.
  • Have a capable partner support your hips during early full-length attempts.
  • End the hold while you still have enough strength to lower yourself deliberately.

If you have shoulder, elbow, or wrist pain or a history of shoulder instability, get advice from a physiotherapist before attempting the full hold.
