Tuck Human Flag

The Tuck Human Flag is a sideways hold on stall bars with your knees drawn toward your chest. It challenges your side-abdominal strength and shoulder stability while shortening the leverage of a full human flag.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Stand sideways beside the stall bars.
  2. Grip separate rungs with your upper hand above your head and your lower hand near hip height.
  3. Press firmly through your lower arm.
  4. Pull through your upper arm against that pressure.
  5. Lift your feet sideways with your knees tucked toward your chest.
  6. Hold the tuck with your torso parallel to the floor.
  7. Lower your feet to the floor under control.

Form cues

  • Keep elbows straight, not hyperextended.
  • Stack your hips without rolling backward.
  • Keep your lower shoulder away from your ear.
  • Breathe steadily behind a firm brace.

Common mistakes

  • Kicking into the holdUse a gradual lift rather than momentum to reach the position.
  • Hips sagging below the shouldersBring your knees closer to your chest to shorten the lever enough to maintain a level torso.
  • Loose fingertip gripWrap your fingers and thumbs fully around each rung for a secure grip.

Safety

Losing your grip or shoulder support can cause a sideways fall. Your arms bear substantial bodyweight, which can strain the shoulders or elbows if you enter abruptly or continue through fatigue.

  • Check that the stall bars are firmly anchored and the rungs are dry.
  • Place a stable landing mat beneath you with no obstacles nearby.
  • Practice the push-pull support with your feet grounded before attempting an unsupported hold.
  • End each attempt before your grip slips or your supporting arm starts to buckle.

If you have shoulder, elbow, or wrist pain or a history of shoulder instability, get advice from a physiotherapist before attempting this hold.
