Jab-Lead Elbow
The jab-lead elbow combines a straight lead-hand punch, a short step forward, and a horizontal elbow strike with the same arm. It trains upper-body striking coordination, hip rotation, and footwork.

- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Stand with one foot forward, knees slightly bent, and hands raised in guard.
- Extend your front hand straight forward into a jab.
- Retract your punching hand to guard.
- Take a short step forward with your front foot.
- Follow with your rear foot to restore your original stance width.
- Fold your lead arm tightly with your hand near the same-side shoulder.
- Sweep your lead elbow horizontally across your centerline with a small turn of your hips and torso.
- Return to your starting guard.
Form cues
- Keep your rear hand by your cheek.
- Let your lead heel turn naturally.
- Keep your head over your hips.
- Exhale briefly with each strike.
Common mistakes
- Reaching with the elbowUse the elbow only at close range rather than leaning forward to reach an imaginary target.
- Overrotating the strikeShorten the elbow's arc so your chest does not turn away from the target.
- Rushing the transitionPractice with a brief pause after the footwork until you can deliver the elbow from a stable base.
Safety
Forcefully snapping strikes into empty space can strain your elbow or shoulder. Turning over a fixed foot can stress your knee, and accidental elbow contact can seriously injure another person.
- Practice this guide as a non-contact sequence with clear space around you.
- Start slowly with short sets before increasing speed.
- Stop the jab just short of locking your elbow.
- End the set when fatigue makes your movements difficult to control.
If you have shoulder, elbow, or knee pain, use slower, smaller movements or seek advice from a physiotherapist before practicing the full sequence.
