Kipping Pull-Up

The kipping pull-up uses a controlled swing and hip drive to help pull your chin above a bar. It trains pulling strength, grip endurance, and whole-body coordination.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Hang from the bar with an overhand grip slightly wider than shoulder width, thumbs wrapped around it.
  2. Move into a small arch with your chest forward of your arms and feet behind you.
  3. Reverse into a hollow shape with your ribs tucked and feet slightly in front of you.
  4. Drive your hips upward as the swing carries you behind the bar.
  5. Pull your elbows toward your sides until your chin clears the bar.
  6. Push yourself away from the bar at the top.
  7. Lengthen your arms as you swing back underneath the bar.
  8. Reduce the swing to finish in a still hang after your final repetition.

Form cues

  • Keep your shoulders engaged
  • Keep your legs together
  • Exhale as you pull

Common mistakes

  • Wild leg kickingCreate a small swing through your shoulders and trunk rather than pumping your knees.
  • Pulling too earlyKeep your arms straight through the initial swing so the hip drive comes before the elbow bend.
  • Craning your neckKeep your head aligned with your torso instead of reaching your chin toward the bar.

Safety

Repeated swinging can strain your shoulders or elbows if you drop abruptly into the bottom position, especially when fatigued. Losing your grip can cause a fall.

  • Build several controlled strict pull-ups and pain-free hanging shoulder control before attempting kipping repetitions.
  • Use a securely mounted bar with enough clearance above, below, and around you for the swing.
  • End the set when your grip slips or you can no longer control the descent.
  • Practice small arch-to-hollow swings before linking full repetitions.

If you have shoulder instability or pain during hanging, choose an easier pulling variation and get advice from a physiotherapist before adding a kip.
