Parallel-Bar Handstand

The parallel-bar handstand is a straight-arm balance held upside down above two rails. It trains shoulder strength, upper-body support, and whole-body control.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Grip the rails at matching points with your thumbs wrapped around them.
  2. Rise into straight-arm support with assistance from a spotter.
  3. Lift your hips over your shoulders into an assisted handstand.
  4. Hold your shoulders, hips, and feet stacked vertically over your hands.
  5. Lower your legs back into upright support with the spotter's assistance.
  6. Return your feet to the landing mat with assistance.

Form cues

  • Push tall through your shoulders.
  • Keep your legs squeezed together.
  • Breathe steadily throughout the hold.

Common mistakes

  • Arching your lower backTighten your abdomen to bring your ribs in line with your pelvis.
  • Looking too far forwardKeep your head between your arms with your gaze near your hands.
  • Twisting toward one railApply even pressure through both hands to keep your body facing squarely along the bars.

Safety

Losing balance above the rails can cause a serious fall onto your head or neck, or a collision with a bar. Fatigue can also cause your elbows or shoulders to collapse under your body weight.

  • Secure the bars at a usable width, roughly shoulder-width, before mounting.
  • Cover the fall area with gymnastics landing mats, leaving no exposed gaps.
  • Use a qualified gymnastics spotter positioned to guard your hips and shoulders throughout the entry, hold, and exit.
  • Practice an assisted exit before attempting the hold, and end the set before your arms begin to buckle.

Choose a supported handstand first if you lack a controlled floor handstand, or seek professional advice before attempting this with wrist, elbow, shoulder, or neck symptoms.
