Parallel-Bar Swing to Handstand
The parallel-bar swing to handstand uses a backward support swing to reach a balanced handstand above the rails. It develops shoulder strength, body control, and swing timing.
Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it
- Start in straight-arm support between the rails, with one hand gripping each bar.
- Build a small forward-and-backward swing from your shoulders.
- Sweep your joined legs backward as the forward swing reverses.
- Open the angle between your arms and torso as your feet rise behind you.
- Bring your hips over your hands as your legs approach vertical.
- Pause in a handstand with your feet stacked over your hips and shoulders.
- Return to support through a previously practiced, spotted downswing.
Form cues
- Look between your hands.
- Keep your ribs tucked.
- Push tall through your shoulders.
Common mistakes
- Throwing the heels past verticalUse less swing amplitude until you can stop your legs directly above the rails.
- Bending the elbows during the riseReturn to lower support swings until you can maintain straight arms throughout.
- Folding sharply at the hipsLet your torso and legs rise together rather than trying to lift your feet independently.
Safety
Losing balance above the rails can cause a fall onto the bars or floor, with serious head or neck injury possible. Poor timing or fatigue can also overload your shoulders, wrists, or elbows.
- Secure the rails at a usable width with gymnastics landing mats covering the landing area.
- Use a qualified gymnastics spotter with safe access to assist the rise and any loss of balance.
- Attempt this skill only after you can control both a parallel-bar support swing and a static parallel-bar handstand.
- End the set when grip, timing, or support strength starts to deteriorate.
If you have wrist, elbow, shoulder, or neck pain, or dizziness when inverted, avoid the full skill and get advice from a physiotherapist or doctor first.
