Parallel-Bar Support Swing

The parallel-bar support swing is a forward-and-backward body swing above the rails with straight arms. It trains shoulder support strength, trunk control, and swing coordination.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Grasp both rails with your palms facing inward.
  2. Rise into straight-arm support with your legs together beneath you.
  3. Start a small forward swing with your legs extended.
  4. Let your body swing backward through the bottom, keeping your hips nearly straight.
  5. Gradually shorten the swings to slow your body.
  6. Finish in motionless straight-arm support.

Form cues

  • Push tall through the rails.
  • Keep your ribs tucked.
  • Let your shoulders balance the swing.

Common mistakes

  • Bending the elbowsReduce swing height until you can maintain straight arms throughout.
  • Pumping with bent kneesMove your legs as one long unit rather than kicking your heels.
  • Folding sharply at the hipsUse a smaller, smoother swing instead of pulling your knees toward your chest.

Safety

Losing your grip or collapsing out of support can cause a fall onto the rails or floor. Large swings and fatigue increase stress on your wrists, elbows, and shoulders.

  • Check that the rails are locked at a width that allows comfortable support.
  • Place landing mats beneath the bars and around the landing area.
  • Use a qualified spotter while learning, with an agreed assisted exit.
  • Practice stable support before adding swings, and stop the set before your grip weakens.

If you cannot hold steady straight-arm support, begin with feet-assisted support; seek professional advice first if support causes wrist, elbow, or shoulder pain.
