How to do it

  1. Sit near the front edge of the chair seat.
  2. Place both forefeet evenly on the pedal, parallel and about hip-width apart.
  3. Rest your hands on the seat beside your hips.
  4. Press the pedal down by extending both legs through a comfortable range.
  5. Bend your knees to let the pedal rise smoothly to its starting height.

Form cues

  • Keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis.
  • Press equally through both feet.
  • Keep your ankles steady.
  • Breathe continuously.

Common mistakes

  • Knees falling inwardKeep each knee pointing toward the middle toes of that foot.
  • Rushing the returnTake two to three seconds to bring the pedal back up.
  • Rocking on the seatShorten the pedal travel until your pelvis stays still throughout the repetition.

Safety

Excessive spring resistance or fatigue can let the returning pedal jerk your legs upward and disturb your balance. Fingers or toes near the spring mechanism can get pinched.

  • Check that the chair is stable, springs are securely attached, and any split pedal is connected for double-leg work.
  • Get instruction on the chair's spring settings before your first session; lighter resistance is not always easier to control.
  • Keep fingers and toes away from springs, hinges, and gaps around the pedal.
  • End the set if you cannot control the pedal's return.

If sitting or pressing causes knee, hip, or back pain, use a smaller pain-free range or seek advice from a physiotherapist before continuing.
