How to do it

  1. Sit near the front edge of the chair seat.
  2. Rest your hands on the sides of the seat.
  3. Place the ball of your working foot in the center of the pedal.
  4. Place your nonworking foot on the floor or a stable support clear of the pedal.
  5. Press the pedal downward through a comfortable range, stopping before your knee locks.
  6. Let the pedal rise slowly to the starting position.

Form cues

  • Keep equal weight on both sitting bones.
  • Grow tall through your head.
  • Track your knee over your middle toes.
  • Exhale as you press.

Common mistakes

  • Rocking your torsoShorten the pedal travel so your leg moves without your trunk tipping forward or backward.
  • Letting the spring snap backKeep pressure through your foot throughout the return instead of letting the pedal lift your leg.
  • Gripping with your toesRelax your toes while maintaining broad contact across the ball of your foot.

Safety

An uncontrolled spring return can jar your knee or cause your foot to slip. Fingers or the resting foot can be pinched if they enter the pedal or spring mechanism.

  • Check that the chair is stable and all spring attachments are secure before sitting.
  • Use the manufacturer's recommended spring setup for seated leg pumps; do not assume the lightest setting is easiest.
  • Keep your hands and nonworking foot outside the pedal's travel and away from the springs.
  • End the set if you cannot maintain secure foot contact.

If knee, hip, or ankle pain limits the movement, use a smaller pain-free range or seek guidance from a physiotherapist before continuing.
