Pilates Chair Standing Leg Pump
The Pilates Chair Standing Leg Pump uses one foot to press a spring-loaded pedal while you balance on the other leg. It trains leg strength, hip control, and standing stability.
- Intermediate
- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 1 min
How to do it
- Stand on the floor facing the chair, close enough to reach the pedal comfortably.
- Grasp the chair’s secured handles for support.
- Place the ball of your working foot on the center of the raised pedal.
- Press the pedal downward by straightening your working leg without locking the knee.
- Bend your working knee to return the pedal slowly to its starting height.
- After your final repetition, guide the pedal to its upper stop.
- Place your working foot back on the floor.
Form cues
- Keep your hips level
- Keep your standing knee soft
- Exhale as you press
- Stay tall through your torso
Common mistakes
- Leaning onto the pedalKeep most of your weight over your standing foot rather than using your body weight to push down.
- Knee falling inwardKeep your working knee pointing in the same direction as your middle toes.
- Bouncing at the bottomReverse direction smoothly before the pedal hits the floor or its lower stop.
Safety
An uncontrolled spring return can pull your working leg upward and disrupt your balance. A slipping foot or moving chair can also cause a fall or trap your foot near the pedal.
- Check that the chair cannot slide and that its springs and handles are securely attached.
- Use a spring setting you can control in both directions; more spring tension is not automatically safer or harder.
- Keep your standing foot clear of the pedal’s travel path.
- End the set if your foot slips or you need to pull hard on the handles to stay upright.
Choose a seated version if you cannot balance comfortably with hand support, and seek professional advice first if knee or hip pain limits the movement.
