Reflex Bag Circle-and-Counter

The Reflex Bag Circle-and-Counter combines short circling steps with a timed punch at a moving target. It trains footwork, balance, and punching accuracy from a new angle.

How to do it

  1. Stand within punching distance in a staggered boxing stance, with your hands beside your cheeks.
  2. Give the target a light jab to start a predictable rebound.
  3. Take a short circling step with the foot nearest your direction of travel.
  4. Slide your other foot the same distance along the arc.
  5. Set your feet at the new angle.
  6. Deliver a controlled straight punch as the target returns within reach.
  7. Return your punching hand to your cheek.

Form cues

  • Keep your chin tucked.
  • Track the target with your eyes.
  • Keep your knees soft.
  • Exhale briefly with the counter.

Common mistakes

  • Crossing your feetUse smaller steps so your feet stay separated throughout the circle.
  • Turning away from the bagReorient your stance toward the target as you move around it.
  • Reaching for the counterWait for the target to enter your punching range rather than leaning beyond your front foot.
  • Bent wrist on contactKeep your fist aligned with your forearm as the glove meets the target.

Safety

An unpredictable rebound can strike your face, while circling too close to the base can cause a trip. Hard or off-center contact can strain your wrist.

  • Check that the base is stable and the spring and target are secure, with clear space around the full rebound path.
  • Wear properly fitted hand wraps and training gloves.
  • Start slowly with low punch power; stop the set if you lose track of the rebound.
  • Let the target settle before approaching the base or making adjustments.

If punching or circling causes wrist, shoulder, ankle, or balance problems, use slow, stationary practice or seek advice from a physiotherapist before continuing.
