How to do it

  1. Set the target at approximately face height.
  2. Stand facing the bag with your non-dominant foot forward, feet about shoulder-width apart, and knees slightly bent.
  3. Position yourself so your lead fist can reach the target with a slight bend remaining in your elbow.
  4. Raise your fists beside your cheeks.
  5. Extend your lead fist straight toward the target for a light, brief contact.
  6. Retract your fist along the same path to your cheek.
  7. Wait for the target to return within reach before starting another repetition.

Form cues

  • Keep your wrist straight.
  • Tuck your chin slightly.
  • Watch the target.
  • Exhale briefly with each punch.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing the moving bagKeep your weight between your feet rather than leaning after a target that has moved away.
  • Pushing through the targetUse a quick touch instead of driving the bag into a large swing.
  • Dropping the rear handKeep your rear glove beside your cheek throughout the jab.

Safety

Off-center contact or snapping the elbow straight on a missed punch can strain your wrist or elbow. A fast rebound can strike your face, especially when fatigue slows your reactions.

  • Use secure hand wraps and properly fitted boxing gloves.
  • Check that the base, spring, and target are secure before starting.
  • Clear the bag's full rebound area of people and obstacles.
  • End the set when your accuracy fades; let the target settle without grabbing it before making adjustments.

If you have wrist, elbow, or shoulder pain, choose pain-free shadow jabs or get advice from a physiotherapist before adding impact.
