Reflex Bag Slip-and-Counter
The reflex bag slip-and-counter pairs a small dodge of a returning bag with a controlled punch. It trains defensive timing, coordination, and upper-body control.

- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Stand within comfortable punching range with your feet staggered, your lead foot forward, and your knees slightly bent.
- Raise your gloves beside your cheeks.
- Tap the center of the bag with a light lead-hand jab.
- As the bag returns, move your head just outside its path with a small bend through your knees and turn through your torso.
- Deliver one controlled straight counterpunch once you are balanced with a clear line to the target.
- Return your punching hand to guard.
Form cues
- Keep your eyes on the target.
- Keep your chin tucked.
- Keep your wrist straight on contact.
- Exhale briefly with the counter.
Common mistakes
- Leaning far sidewaysKeep your head over your base of support rather than bending sideways at the waist.
- Reaching after the bagWait for the target to come within reach instead of chasing it with an extended arm.
- Dropping the nonpunching handKeep your free glove beside your cheek throughout the counter.
Safety
A fast or poorly tracked rebound can strike your face. Forceful, off-center punches can strain your wrist, especially as fatigue reduces control.
- Check that the base is stable, the spring and target are secure, and the full rebound area is clear.
- Wear properly fitted hand wraps and training gloves.
- Increase rebound speed gradually; stop the set when you can no longer time the return.
- Let the bag settle without grabbing it before making adjustments.
If you have neck, shoulder, or wrist pain, practice the sequence without bag contact and seek advice from a physiotherapist before adding impact.
