How to do it

  1. Stand beside the reformer near the footbar, facing the footbar end.
  2. Place both hands on the footbar.
  3. Plant your front foot on the floor beside the frame.
  4. Place the ball of your rear foot on the carriage, with your heel against the shoulder rest.
  5. Lower into a lunge by bending your front knee as the carriage slides backward.
  6. Return the carriage to its starting position by straightening your front leg.
  7. Step your rear foot onto the floor after completing your repetitions.

Form cues

  • Keep your hips facing forward.
  • Track your front knee over your toes.
  • Keep your front heel heavy.
  • Breathe steadily through the movement.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching too far backwardShorten the carriage travel so your lower back does not arch to create extra range.
  • Snapping the carriage closedSlow the return so the carriage reaches the stopper quietly.
  • Hanging on the footbarUse your hands for balance rather than pulling yourself upright with your arms.

Safety

A moving carriage can cause a fall if your foot slips or you lose control of the springs. Excessive range can also strain the rear hip or front knee.

  • Have a qualified Pilates instructor select the spring setting and teach your first standing setup; lighter springs are not necessarily easier.
  • Confirm that the footbar is locked and the floor and carriage contact surfaces are dry.
  • Keep the carriage fully home while mounting or dismounting.
  • End the set if fatigue makes your balance or carriage control unreliable.

If you have balance difficulties or hip, knee, or back pain, choose a supported floor lunge or seek advice from a physiotherapist before using the moving carriage.
