Reformer Short Box Side Bend
The Reformer Short Box Side Bend is a seated Pilates exercise that trains your side abdominal muscles through controlled sideways bending while keeping your pelvis steady.
- Intermediate
- Isolation
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Sit facing the footbar on the short box positioned across the carriage.
- Place both feet beneath the safety strap with your legs extended comfortably.
- Reach your arms overhead with your hands shoulder-width apart.
- Bend your torso to one side within a comfortable range.
- Return your torso to upright.
- Repeat the bend on the opposite side.
Form cues
- Lengthen through the crown of your head.
- Exhale as you return upright.
- Reach through your fingertips.
Common mistakes
- Lifting the opposite hipShorten the bend so both sitting bones stay in contact with the box.
- Turning toward the floorKeep your chest facing forward throughout the sideways bend.
- Arching with arms overheadCross your arms over your chest if reaching overhead makes your ribs flare or lower back arch.
Safety
A shifting box or loose foot strap can let you slip while leaning sideways. Forcing the range or dropping into the bend can strain your back.
- Use the reformer's recommended short-box setup, with springs securing the carriage against movement.
- Check that the box is stable and the safety strap is securely attached before sitting.
- Keep gentle upward pressure against the strap throughout the movement.
- End the set if you cannot reverse the bend smoothly.
If you have back pain or cannot sit securely with your feet under the strap, choose a floor-based version and seek guidance from a physiotherapist before progressing.
