Roll-and-Lead-Hook Counter

The roll-and-lead-hook counter is a boxing drill that links ducking under an imagined hook with a hook from your front hand. It trains defensive timing, trunk rotation, and balance.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your preferred foot forward, feet about shoulder-width apart, and knees slightly bent.
  2. Raise your hands beside your cheeks.
  3. Lower your head slightly toward your rear side by bending your knees.
  4. Sweep your head through a shallow U toward your front-leg side, beneath an imagined hook.
  5. Rise into a balanced stance with slightly more weight over your front leg.
  6. Throw a short front-hand hook at an imagined chin, turning your hips and front foot with the punch.
  7. Return your punching hand to your cheek.
  8. Reset your weight between both feet.

Form cues

  • Keep your eyes on the target.
  • Keep your rear hand protecting your jaw.
  • Exhale briefly with the hook.
  • Keep your wrist straight.

Common mistakes

  • Folding at the waistKeep your chest upright enough to see forward rather than bowing toward the floor.
  • Rolling too deepUse only enough dip to clear the imagined punch instead of dropping into a squat.
  • Swinging a wide hookKeep your elbow bent and stop the punch near your centerline rather than letting it wrap behind you.

Safety

Forceful rotation over a planted foot can strain your knee. Throwing an uncontrolled hook into empty space can irritate your shoulder, especially as you fatigue.

  • Practice without contact in a clear space; do not aim punches at another person.
  • Start at half speed with light punches before linking the sequence faster.
  • Use a surface that allows your front foot to turn without slipping.
  • End the set when you can no longer control the punch or finish in balance.

If knee, back, or shoulder pain limits bending or rotation, use a smaller, slower movement or seek advice from a physiotherapist before continuing.
