Rotating Reflex Bar Roll-and-Counter

The rotating reflex bar roll-and-counter pairs a roll beneath a moving padded arm with a controlled punch. It trains defensive timing, balance, and coordinated punching.

  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Take a staggered boxing stance within reach of the target, with your hands beside your cheeks.
  2. Start a slow rotation with a light tap to the designated striking target.
  3. Bend your knees as the padded arm approaches.
  4. Shift your weight toward the opposite leg, moving your head beneath the arm in a shallow U-shaped path.
  5. Rise into your boxing stance once the arm clears your head.
  6. Deliver one controlled counterpunch to the designated target.
  7. Return your punching hand to your guard.

Form cues

  • Keep the moving arm in view.
  • Keep your chin tucked.
  • Let your knees follow your toes.
  • Exhale briefly with the counter.

Common mistakes

  • Folding forward at the waistLower yourself through your hips and knees rather than tipping your chest toward the floor.
  • Rolling too deepUse only enough depth to clear the padding so you can recover without a large upward movement.
  • Reaching for the counterSet your starting distance so the punch reaches the target without straightening your elbow fully or leaning beyond your feet.

Safety

A mistimed roll can let the rotating arm strike your head or face, especially as speed increases or fatigue builds. An off-center punch can strain your wrist.

  • Check the base, pivot, padding, height setting, and full rotation clearance before starting.
  • Wear secured hand wraps and training gloves with your wrists straight at contact.
  • End the set if you cannot consistently track and clear the arm.
  • Move outside the bar's full sweep before letting it settle; never grab the moving arm or adjust the apparatus while it rotates.

Choose a no-apparatus roll-and-counter or seek professional guidance first if you have dizziness, balance problems, or neck, back, knee, or wrist pain.
