Wall Pad Entry-and-Exit Drill

The wall pad entry-and-exit drill pairs a step-in straight punch with a retreat out of range. It trains punching coordination, distance judgment, and balance during boxing footwork.

  • Beginner
  • Compound
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Stand just beyond punching range in a staggered boxing stance, with your lead foot forward and fists near your cheeks.
  2. Step your lead foot toward the pad.
  3. Slide your rear foot forward the same distance to restore your stance.
  4. Deliver a light lead-hand straight punch to the center of the pad at shoulder height.
  5. Return your punching hand to your cheek.
  6. Step your rear foot backward out of punching range.
  7. Slide your lead foot backward the same distance to finish in your starting stance.

Form cues

  • Keep your chin slightly tucked.
  • Stack your wrist behind your knuckles.
  • Keep your eyes on the target.
  • Exhale briefly with the punch.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching with your torsoAdjust your entry distance so you can reach the pad without leaning beyond your front foot.
  • Crossing or narrowing your feetKeep each foot on its own track, with enough sideways space to stay balanced.
  • Locking the punching elbowMake contact with a slight bend in your elbow rather than snapping it fully straight.

Safety

A fixed wall pad absorbs less movement than a hanging bag, so forceful or misaligned punches can injure your hand or wrist. Rushed backward steps can also cause a trip or ankle twist.

  • Check that the pad mounts are secure and the striking surface has no exposed hard spots.
  • Wear properly fitted hand wraps and boxing gloves.
  • Clear the entry and retreat path of obstacles before starting.
  • Use touch-level contact until your footwork is consistent; stop the set if fatigue disrupts your balance.

If you have hand, wrist, shoulder, or ankle pain, use a slow no-contact version and seek advice from a physiotherapist before adding impact.
